an introduction to maison 1973 by it’s creator, Nic Tierney
“Maison 1973 was created for the women of Gen X.
Bold. Untamed. Refined.
This is about her.”
“I’ve wanted to build this for as long as I can remember – and now, the time feels right. We’ve faced many wonderful and many difficult moments in life to date and now, we get to decide what comes next. There’s a quiet kind of freedom in that – and it’s from that place this brand was born. I’m all in. This is just the beginning. The vision for maison is big – and we’re only getting started.
Before maison 1973, I spent decades behind the scenes, travelling the world and shaping some of Australia’s most recognised and loved household brands – leading teams, launching products internationally, and quietly turning good ideas into commercial success stories. My background runs deep in design, brand strategy and creative direction – across fashion, home, lifestyle and retail. But really – my love has always been connection. Writing. Storytelling. Building things that matter.
In 2016, I launched my own brand, product and design agency – The Product Room – working with everyone from bold start-ups to big brands, across the globe. I’ve built a career on understanding not just what makes something beautiful, but what makes it last. And throughout it all, the greatest privilege has been mentoring and working alongside brilliant teams – leading not with noise, but with clarity, trust, resilience and vision.
For as long as I’ve worked in brand and product, I’ve been fascinated by what shapes a generation. What drives us, defines us, and how we evolve. And over time, I realised: Gen X women – the ones who grew up in the late ’70s and ’80s – were missing from the conversation. Not only in voice, but in visibility.
We’re often overlooked, squeezed between clichés. But we’re the doers, the adapters. The ones still building careers, raising families, starting businesses – and doing it all with style, wit, and a strong perspective. We are not done. Absolutely far from it. In fact, we’re just getting started.
Maison 1973 is the space I couldn’t find – so I made it. A space that sees us clearly. That celebrates humour, substance, style, and smart, soulful living. A place to explore ideas, find your new favourite thing, rediscover your voice – and connect with women who get it. A place to take a moment and read beyond a headline. Curiosity is at the core of everything we do and stand for, at maison.
Personally? I find joy in the simple things: cooking, a good laugh with mates, a great meal, a design that just works, the smell of the ocean, my dog and travel with my husband. I believe so many of us are craving more meaning, less noise – and that’s exactly what maison 1973 is here to offer. This is the brand I’ve always wanted to create. I am truly honoured that you have found your way here. Welcome home.”
